Cornel Gunter's Coasters book celebrates Black History month by providing insights into the life of a Black performer. The book describes his home, his fame, his move to Los Angeles and the world-famous talent he became. More than that, it tells about life on the road and the reception on the eastern seaboard. One of the most memorable scenes in the book was the performance at a private girl's school in the deep south. The group walked onto the stage and was told to face the back of the stage. The coeds were not allowed to see the performers' faces and the Black performers were not allowed to gaze into the audience. The most humiliating experience, yet it beat the hanging they observed of a young Black man on a narrow country winding road. Read the book for an intimate view of bigotry.
